Kohama Island
Kohama became famous as the setting for a popular Japanese `soap` opera, Chura San, and a number of Japanese tourists still visit to see the location. The house within the village where the program was set is in the local traditional style. Another film setting was Sugar Road, so called as it is bordered by sugar cane fields. The island itself has a number of vantage points, Chura San Point to look over to Iriomote, and Ufudake to view Kohama itself. On a clear day one see as far as Hateruma, the most southerly island of Yaeyama, and indeed Japan. The small local folklore museum has interesting examples of ceremonial masks.
